Practical Metrics for Project Control, Optimization and Recovery

Topic                     : Practical Metrics for Project Control, Optimization and Recovery

Presentation Description

Metrics such as Cost Performance Index (CPI) remain one of the best metrics for evaluating project performance.  However, it’s usage remains limited in many organizations for a host of reasons.  Although the formulas for the elements of Earned Value Management (EVM) are essential knowledge for project managers, practitioners are often puzzled with the usefulness and quality of the results. This presentation will focus on the practical aspects of applying EVM using both costs and labor effort along with other techniques such as milestone trend analysis and critical path drag.  With the growing focus on benefits management, we will also discuss adding a true “value” metric to project control techniques to capture the impact of project schedule, cost or scope performance on the expected program benefits.

Topics:

  • Project control -
    • Earned value metrics (cost and labor effort based)
    • TCPI
    • Critical Ratio
    • Milestone Trend Analysis
  • Business case for optimization or recovery – the value of time
  • Project value recovery/optimization – Critical path drag
  • Examples in practice/ case studies
  • Discussion and questions
